Dental Veneers

Cosmetic dentistry has reached such heights that a proper dentist can easily, quickly and often painlessly solve almost any problem with your teeth.

Almost every person has some problem of the other with his teeth. They may be crooked, broken, painful, missing or simply not beautiful. All these can be cured by cosmetic dentistry of which dental veneers form an important part. Veneers made of porcelain are thin egg shell pieces of porcelain that slip over the existing teeth to give them a new look. Porcelain veneers can be used for many cosmetic improvements of a person’s teeth and smile.

Advantages of Veneers

Veneers can improve
  • Stained teeth
  • Close gaps
  • Correct malpositioned teeth
  • Twisted teeth
  • Worn out teeth
  • Make teeth look longer or broader
  • Cover old bridges and crowns.

Veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed on top of a tooth to improve the looks and appearance or to protect a damaged tooth.

There are many advantages of using a veneer. With very little tooth preparation like drilling, a tooth can be improved. Some veneers are just placed on top of the teeth, hence there is not much of drilling needed and the treatment is less invasive and less time consuming. Sometimes several types of veneers are needed to correct all the wrong teeth in your mouth.

As they are placed over an existing tooth, they cannot be bulky. So the veneer has to be very thin without being too fragile otherwise it may crack.

Dental veneers are specially designed shells of ceramic material, which is exactly like a tooth material. They cover the worn tooth or uneven tooth giving a pleasant and beautiful final tooth. Almost any and every type of teeth can be made into a perfect set using veneers. They give you aligned shapely teeth.

Veneers can also correct
  • Worn out enamel which is due to aging, heredity or result of wrong food habits
  • Wear and tear. Teeth can become chipped, or cracked or broken or have an uneven appearance due to aging
  • Genetics: Some people have abnormal space between their teeth and they are born with it.
  • Uneven teeth

Not only do veneers serve cosmetically, they also protect the surface of the teeth. When veneers replace a crown they eliminate invasive tooth preparation. Veneers are so thin that they easily fit onto the teeth and do not require much reshaping. Though they are thin and fragile, once they are bonded onto the teeth they become strong and durable. Care has to be taken not to hurt the veneers and the dentist may advise you on refraining from eating some hard foodstuff and advise you on wearing a protective cover while sleeping.

There may be certain cases where veneers are not suitable. The dentist will check your teeth and let you know whether you are a suitable candidate or not. Different types of materials are used in making veneers. The most common are porcelain and composite resin. Porcelain veneers are better but more expensive. They are bonded to the teeth with resin cement.

Veneers can be used instead of whitening the existing teeth, or drilling and filling a broken tooth.
